Chuck…3rd Time is a Charm

I’ve enjoyed Chuck over the last 2 weeks, but it didn’t really blow me away. Well, this week, Chuck moved from if-I-have-time to must-see. (more…)

Last nights episode was very poorly written. (more…)
I believe The Office to be one of the best TV comedies ever to be shown on American television. Last night, they took the stupidity to far. Not since Ryan’s initiation in the beet field has something so utterly stupid occurred. Of course, I am talking about Micheal driving into the lake and subsequent trashing of the client’s office.
The show has always had its silly side, but they took it too far. Micheal is not an idiot, and today they made him one. To be true to his character, he should have had some small bit of success, and acted as if it was huge. Remember, they’ve shown us time and time again that no matter what his faults are, Micheal is a good salesman.
Maybe it’s because they stretched a half-hour episode into an hour. I don’t know, but I hope they do not do this again. Micheal deserves more.
Last night on Smallville we got to meet Kara, Superman’s cousin and our Supergirl. There was both good and bad.
Good: I thought that Laura Vandervoort did a good job playing Kara. That type of character is so often screwed up with poor acting, or with the actor not knowing the character well enough. Also, having Kara with her full powers, and still needing Clark to help her along was good storytelling.
The tongue-n-cheek is just enough to keep the character fun, with enough emotion to keep it grounded. It was a good introduction to the character, much better than evil-Kara.
Bad: Clark not being able to fly is really getting on my nerves. I know that Gough said, “no flight, no tights”, and doesn’t want to go back on that assertion. But now after having Flash, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter and now Supergirl with their full powers, it just seems silly. They even winked their eye at us with the discussion about flying between Clark and Kara.
Also, having Jor-El tell Kal-El that Kara is dangerous is also tired. Why can’t we just have interesting stories about Kara coping with her life on Earth, and her interaction with Clark? Also, after Kara tells Clark about how she hurts hearing of the destruction of Krypton, why wouldn’t he take her to his Fortress. It just doesn’t make sense.
Conclusion: In all, it was a solid episode, other than the new Chief who is awful young to be in that position (also, I wish Lana would have stayed dead). I am really looking forward to see how the Supergirl storyline continues.
The Pushing Daisies pilot was the best 40 minutes of television that I can remember seeing. It was so good it could have been a theatrical movie. It looked beautiful. It was acted and directed beautifully. It was extremely entertaining. The Suess’ian voice-over would normally be annoying in a prime-time show, but in the case of Daisies, it was perfect. From the very first minute, I was completely engaged in the show. After only one episode, I feel like I’ve known these characters forever.
For those who have not seen Daisies (shame on you), it will remind you of Big Fish and possibly Stardust. Though not a fairytale, the tone is very much a fairytale. Kind of like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
I really hope that they can keep the freshness of this show throughout the season. I have never been this engaged in a show after only one episode. It is just amazing.
