The ending of the Housewives season finale last night completely caught me by surprise. In a move usually reserved for ’series’ finales, “BSG” or “Lost”, the last 2 minutes of the “Desperate Housewives” finale takes us 5 years on the future (See the clip here.). A synopsis of the flash-forward is…

Among the most surprising of them all is Gabrielle Solis’ two children, Juanita and Celiam whom she is the mother of. Eva admitted that the children made her enjoy the shoot of the series instead og making her strictly come for for and work leave routine on the sets.

Bree (Marcia Cross) is is cook book author whose agent is her son. Susan (Teri Hatcher) has found a new man. But what hasn’t changed is Lynette still being after her still extremely naughty now teenage children.

I can’t seem to find confirmation. Is this a BSG-style jump? Or, a “Lost”-style flash-forward? I’m a fare-weather fan of DH as sometimes the storylines are chalkboard-scraping bad. Susan’s future husband/boyfriend has been cast as a regular next season, but that doesn’t give us a timeline. The part of the jump I enjoyed was Gabrielle’s. Her character has gotten stale and needed a reboot. Carlos’ blindness just wasn’t enough.

Was it a jump? Was it a flash-forward? Was it a good idea?

Last night on Desperate Housewives had its ups and downs. There were three main story lines; Danielle’s baby, Mike’s Dad, and Lynette’s cancer. One was good, one was bad, and one was awful. The Gabby/Carlos story did progress, but nothing we didn’t expect.

Danielle’s pregnancy took a very funny turn tonight when Bree became her Halloween costume. Her imitation of Bree was hilarious, and excellently acted by Joy Lauren. Cross’s interaction with her Danielle in the final scene was amazing, and really brought the Bree/Danielle relationship full circle. It was a little obvious that the only reason they needed Nathan Fillion to deliver the baby was to get the Frankenstein picture (left). It was kind of offhanded. But, it didn’t ruin it for me at all.

The way that Lynette’s cancer reveal was handled was very awkward. It wasn’t immediately evident what parallels they were trying to draw, and her sudden obsession with an opossum seemed out of left field. This was a necessary story for her, but could have been handled a little better. I read that there was some footage left on the cutting room floor of Lynette at the hospital that could have made it better. Maybe they should have left it in and cut out more of Susan’s story.

Or cut out all of Susan’s story. This entire event was just terrible. They went a very long way to show that Susan has misgivings about Mike, and that Mike may or may not be hiding a drug problem from Susan. That could have been accomplished in much less screen time, with much less pain. At no time was Susan ever in the right, which made this very poor. Teri Hatcher continues to get the worst writing on the show.

In all it was a good episode, except for the overly drawn out part of the Susan/Mike fiasco.

Last nights episode was very poorly written. The whole reason for the pie vs salad confrontation was for Bree to sneak into the house and discover that Katherine had a secret. The whole storyline was boring and annoying at the same time. At least it had a payoff. From the time Bree realized she had the key, it got better.

Another situation that was unbelievable in the Desperate universe was the interaction between Gabby and Lynette over the hospital visits. Lynette was never the kind of person that would “test” her friendships openly. Also, she would have realized that Gabby had a personal trauma in her past that caused her fear of hospitals. I love Lynette (as well as Fellicity), but they are taking cheap plots with her cancer storyline.

To sum it up, it was a lazy episode. I guess the writers have already started their strike on Desperate.
