“The Guild” stars Felicia Day, Vincent Caso, Jeff Lewis, Amy Okuda, Robin Thorsen and Sandeep Parikh and is an independent sitcom webisode about a group of online gamers. It is written for gamers, about gamers by a gamer. Episodes vary from 3-6 minutes in length, and follow the Guild members’ lives online and offline.

As I don’t live near San Diego, and won’t be able to make ComicCon, I’ll be picking up the DVD when it becomes available online afterward. There are currently no details on DVD extras, but one can image that at a minimum all video available at the website will be on the DVD.

There attempt was “Birds Of Prey“.

“Birds Of Prey” is loosely based on the comic book of the same name. The show followed the adventures of Oracle, formerly Batgirl. She’s been crippled, and confined to a wheelchair. She teams up with Huntress. Huntress is the daughter of Batman and Catwoman, Helena. She is a “metahuman”, getting her powers from her mother (i.e. the Burton Catwoman). To round out the trio is Dinah Redmond, the daughter of “The Black Canary” (played in one episode by Markie Post). She is also a ‘metahuman’, and joins Oracle and Huntress fighting crime in a Batman-less Gotham city.

Yes, this was a poorly written show, but it had so much potential. The concept was a winner, but it just wasn’t given enough freedom to explore the mythos. Because of various Batman projects that were in the works, BoP was limited on what it could explore. Had WB just let it be in a separate universe (as they did for “Smallville”), it could have had a much richer story. Although Joker appears in the pilot, it is in voice only and voiced most excellently by Mark Hamill (who voiced Joker for years in animated series).

I plan on picking up these DVDs even though I found many flaws in the series. I really liked the attempt and wish they would revisit the premise again (minus the meta-humans). BoP holds up better than some current episodes of “Smallville”. Also, when “Smallville” had the opportunity to bring in Black Canary, they completely blew it.

“Birds of Prey” is currently available for pre-order.

I sat this weekend and watched the direct to DVD movie, “Justice League: The New Frontier” with my son. I have to say that it was a pleasant surprise.

New Frontier is set in the late 1950s early 1960s and is based on the comic “The New Frontier“. This is pre-JLA, and the government is fresh off McCarthyism where superheroes are outlawed. I don’t want to get into spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that. The film accomplishes getting you into the era. Constant references are made to real historical events (even if they are not accurate), and the look and feel is consistent with the comics of the day.

One of the best tools used to accomplish this are the voices, especially Batman and Superman. Batman sounds like the gruff detective you’d expect from the 40 and 50s, and Superman has a similar ‘feel’ to his voice. Each and every hero conveys there period via tone of voice, and it is absolutely immersing.

The story is excellent, and heartfelt. It chokes you up in a way that almost no live-action movie ever has been able to do. Yes, there are definite cartoon moments, but it is a cartoon. With not much script massaging, this movie could be the best superhero movie ever to grace the screen. This should be the new Justice League movie.

I give “Justice League: The New Frontier” a I have to see it again.

At the same time as Get Smart debuts in theaters, we’ll get a spin-off on DVD featuring 2 of the semi-main characters. This is an interesting approach, and if successful, I could see more plans like this. From SliceOfSciFi.com:

When the new “Get Smart” movie starring Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway hits the big screen this coming June 20th a spinoff featuring two of the the film’s minor characters will be released almost simultaneously on DVD.

Those two secondary characters being featured on the DVD aren’t minor actors, however. “Heroes” alum Masi Oka and Nate Torrence from the critically acclaimed, but short lived series “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” will portray Bruce and Lloyd respectfully. They will be portraying those same two characters in the big screen feature as well but won’t be getting a lot of camera time for that bit.

Although we have yet to see Get Smart all indications are that it is an enjoyable movie. Both Masi Oka and Nate Torrence are enjoyable to watch (at least in their respective shows), and should be a great addition to Get Smart. I wonder if they will be able to carry their own movie. It should be interesting.

According to TVShowsOnDVD we can expect the 2nd season DVDs on 11 December 2007.

We've got the jump on HBO Home Video's formal announcement, with word of a December 11th planned release date. The first season set came out almost a year ago, at a $99.99 SRP. This time, HBO brings the price down significantly, with a list price of $59.99 for 12 hour-long episodes.

The gem of the season one DVDs was the excellent commentary tracks; most notably the commentary by all three sister-wives for the season finale. I would expect the season 2 commentaries to be equally good. We can also expect the shorts and specials that were shown on HBO & HBO.com to be part of the set. Myself, I waited until the set came down in price ($29.99) before I picked up season one, and I may do the same for season two. But, I will definitely be getting this one.
