Katherine Heigl recently spoke out about her decision to not seek an Emmy nomination this year after her stellar win last year. The Hollywood Reporter has:
“I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization” decided against competing, Heigl said in a written statement provided by her publicist, Melissa Kates, who was contacted by the AP.
“In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials,” added Heigl. She plays Dr. Izzie Stevens on “Grey’s Anatomy,” which slipped in the ratings this past season but remained a top 10 show.
Although I think is was rude to express those thoughts publicly, I do agree with them. I’ve expressed my feelings in the past on the terrible way that the writers have treated her character this past season. Izzie was unbelievably out of character for nearly the entire season, yet I still believe Heigl shined. She did an excellent job of being given lemons, and making lemonade. Only at the end of the season was the character of Izzie truly brought back.
Should Heigl have expressed her opinion of her co-workers so publicly? I have mixed feelings. I like openness, and I wish more people in the public eye would express themselves openly. Also, she has done this in the past (the whole Isaiah Washington incident), so it isn’t out of character for Heigl.
